Citizens of most countries can get a visa on arrival ($50 USD) or apply for an e-visa before travel via irembo.gov.rw. Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth, and Francophonie countries enter visa-free. The East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) covers Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya. We can assist with applications.
Rwanda permits cost $1,500 USD per person per trek (Volcanoes National Park, set by Rwanda Development Board). Uganda's Bwindi permits cost $800 USD. Permits are limited (only 96 people per day in Rwanda), so book well in advance — especially for peak months (June-September, December-January).
Rwanda is year-round. The two dry seasons — June–September and December–February — are best for gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing. The rainy seasons (March-May, October-November) bring lush green scenery, fewer crowds, and lower lodge prices. Trails can be muddy, but gorillas are seen 99% of the time year-round.
Treks last 1–8 hours depending on where the gorilla family is that day. Terrain is steep, muddy, and at altitude (2,500–3,500m). You should be in good general health and comfortable walking 5–10 km in challenging conditions. We strongly recommend hiring a porter ($15–$20) — they carry your bag and help over the steep bits. The minimum age is 15.
For trekking: waterproof hiking boots, long trousers tucked into socks (against stinging nettles), long-sleeve shirt, light rain jacket, gardening gloves, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, water bottle, snack. For safari: light clothing in neutral colors, binoculars, camera with zoom lens. Yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory to enter Rwanda.
